December 2024 Newsletter | Cylchlythyr Misol Rhagfyr 2024

  1. With the 31 January 2025 tax payment deadline looming, you may be thinking "where is my HMRC payslip?". HMRC have confirmed they are not obliged to send a payslip through the post as online banking facilities are available for tax payments.

If you have tax amounts due by 31 January and have not received a payslip through the post, don't forget to pay!

  2. As we look forward to 2025, some of you may already be planning your holidays for the forthcoming year. Remember to ensure that you have your travel insurance arrangements in place before you book your holiday. This can help greatly if the holiday provider subsequently goes bust before your holiday begins.

  3. Two high profile national firms offering estate planning / trusts and wills have gone into liquidation in recent months, causing headaches for many families in terms of getting hold of original wills / trust documents etc. Check that you know where your wills and legal documents are held and that you and your family have easy access to the documents when they are needed.

  4. Do you use online marketplaces to purchase or sell items? There has been a noticeable increase in fraudsters on these sites in recent weeks. Some indicators to look out for:

    • Is the price offered too good to be true? Be wary of heavily discounted prices.

    • Is the seller rushing you into a decision? Creating a sense of urgency is a common tactic used by scammers, in the hope that individuals look past any concerns.

    • Is the payment method recognised and secure? Never pay by bank transfer. Use a credit card instead, as this will offer greater protection in the event of a scam.

Ask Huw & Aled

Q: I am nearing retirement age and my current (and final!) employer is, at least, the 7th different employer I have had during my career. I am unsure whether I have pensions with all of these employers. What should I do?

A: Keeping track of all your pension plans can be a difficult task, but it is very important. Check your records for each employer you have had during your career and contact each individual pension scheme. Recently, an individual who served in the Armed Forces 40 years ago had a first meeting with a new financial adviser. After enquiring of their past employments, the financial advisor has been in touch with the Armed Forces and secured an excellent pension and backpay.

Some of you could be in for a nice surprise!
